Siding
What Is Fiber Cement?
Fiber CementFiber cement siding is a composite material made by combining Portland cement, sand, water, and cellulose (wood) fibers under high pressure. The result is a panel that looks like real wood, but is far more durable, dimensionally stable, and resistant to the elements.
Unlike vinyl which fades and warps, or wood which rots and requires constant maintenance, fiber cement holds its shape and color decade after decade. It doesn't expand or contract dramatically with temperature changes, making it ideal for North Carolina's humid climate.
It is fire resistant, doesn't feed termites or rot fungi, and can be painted or factory-finished. Every major brand we install — Hardie, Nichiha, and Allura — is fiber cement. The differences are in finish quality, warranty length, and price point.
+ Advantages
- 50+ year lifespan
- Fire resistant (Class A)
- Won't rot, warp, or splinter
- Termite & pest resistant
- Authentic wood appearance
- Low maintenance
- Paintable or factory-finished
- Resists NC humidity
- Excellent ROI / home value
– Considerations
- Higher upfront cost than vinyl
- Heavier (professional install)
- Needs repainting every 10–15 yrs
- More labor intensive to cut
Siding
Vinyl Siding
PVC / VinylVinyl siding is made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) — a rigid plastic that is molded into lap, shake, or panel profiles and applied over a home's sheathing. It's been the most popular siding material in America for decades due to its low cost and zero-paint maintenance.
However, vinyl has real limitations in NC's climate. It can warp in heat, crack in cold, and fade over 10–15 years. It cannot be repainted once the color fades — the entire siding must be replaced. It also poses fire risk (releases toxic fumes) and has lower wind resistance than fiber cement.
We offer vinyl as a budget solution, but always present fiber cement as the smarter long-term investment. The extra cost of fiber cement pays for itself over a 30-year period.
+ Advantages
- Lowest upfront cost
- Zero painting required
- Many colors available
- Easy to install
- Lightweight
- Wide availability
– Considerations
- Warps in extreme heat
- Cracks in cold weather
- Fades after 10–15 years
- Cannot be repainted
- Not fire resistant
- Shorter lifespan (20–30 yr)
- Lower resale value impact
- Plastic appearance
Siding
Metal Siding
Steel / AluminumMetal siding — primarily steel or aluminum panels — is the choice for commercial buildings, high-wind zones, and modern architectural designs. Steel panels are coated with Galvalume (zinc-aluminum alloy) for rust protection, then finished with a baked-on paint coating.
Metal siding requires zero maintenance once installed. It doesn't rot, warp, or attract insects. It is Class A fire rated, handles hurricane-force winds, and can last 50+ years with no repainting on quality coatings.
For residential use, metal siding has grown dramatically in popularity as modern farmhouse and industrial aesthetics have become mainstream. Wood-look metal panels now replicate cedar grain convincingly. For commercial and multi-family projects, metal cladding systems are the professional standard.
+ Advantages
- 40–50 year lifespan
- Zero maintenance
- Class A fire rated
- Hurricane / wind resistant
- Pest and rot proof
- Modern aesthetic options
- 100% recyclable
- Ideal for commercial
– Considerations
- Higher material cost
- Can dent (aluminum)
- Industrial look not for everyone
- Requires professional install
- Expansion/contraction noise

Wood Siding
Cedar / Redwood / PineWestern Red Cedar is the gold standard for wood siding — naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect attack without chemical treatment. Redwood offers similar properties with a richer color, but scarcity has pushed prices significantly higher in recent years.
Wood siding comes in multiple profiles: bevel (lap), shiplap, board & batten, tongue & groove, and shingles. It can be stained, painted, or left to weather naturally to a silvery gray. The key requirement is proper maintenance — cleaning, staining or repainting every 3–7 years depending on exposure.
For NC's humid climate, wood siding requires careful attention to moisture management: proper flashing, house wrap, drainage gaps, and regular inspection. When maintained, it's beautiful and adds significant character to custom homes. For most clients, we recommend fiber cement as a lower-maintenance alternative that achieves the same wood look.
+ Advantages
- Authentic natural beauty
- Environmentally renewable
- Can be stained any color
- Easy to cut / install
- Adds character / warmth
- Historic / custom home appeal
- Repairable section by section
– Considerations
- High maintenance (3–7 yr cycle)
- Can rot if not maintained
- Susceptible to insects
- Not ideal for NC humidity
- Shorter lifespan without care
- High cost (redwood)
- Fire risk
